What is Checkweigher?

Also called: check weigher, in-motion scale, dynamic scale

A checkweigher is an inline scale that weighs every pack while it moves along the line and automatically rejects any pack outside set weight limits.

A typical checkweigher has three conveyor sections. The infeed belt spaces the packs out. The weigh belt sits on a load cell, which may be a strain gauge or an electromagnetic force restoration cell. The reject section removes failed packs with an air blast, a pusher, a diverting arm or a drop-down belt, usually into a bin.

The machine takes many readings while each pack crosses the weigh belt and combines them into one weight. It sorts each pack as underweight, accepted or overweight. It also records data that can be used to prove compliance with net-quantity rules. Many checkweighers can send feedback to the filler upstream to reduce overfilling. They are often combined with a metal detector. See our checkweigher buying guide.
